911 dispatchers are the heartbeat of the nation’s 911 system and are the professionals called upon to ensure that citizens receive the best emergency communications and dispatch services by remaining calm, gathering information, and providing assistance to individuals in need.
Their work involves answering inquiries, referring calls to appropriate law enforcement agencies or emergency medical services companies, determining the response requirements and prioritizing situations, and dispatching units according to a set of established procedures.
911 dispatcher jobs require excellent communication skills and the ability to work under stressful situations.
911 operators take all applicable information from the caller, including details and the address of the emergency.
Through the gathering of information, 911 operators are then able to dispatch the appropriate team or transfer the call to the applicable agency.
Many 911 dispatchers are also qualified to provide medical information to the caller until emergency help arrives.
911 dispatcher jobs require candidates with some technical savvy, as they will be responsible for operating advanced emergency communications systems through their computers.
* Answers 911 and administration phone lines (responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance).
* Ability to determine proper response requirements and the relative priority of calls.
* Must be able to interpret, analyze, and anticipate the caller’s situation to resolve problems, gather information, provide information, dispatch emergency services, and/or refer callers to other agencies.
* Dispatch law enforcement, fire and/or EMS responders in accordance with established procedures.
* Ability to gather and relay pertinent information to emergency services personnel to assist in their response.
* Assist law enforcement by responding to requests to make critical telephone calls; cause local, state, and national records to be checked on persons, vehicles, and other property; obtain other information requested from law enforcement from a variety of sources; other related assistance as requested.
* Operation of a multi-line telephone console system, alerting system, Text to 9-1-1, and TDD system for the deaf and hearing-impaired.
* Perform emergency medical dispatch and crisis intervention services, including dispatch instructions.
Ask vital questions and provide pre-arrival instructions for emergency medical calls.
* Monitor and operate a radio console and computer equipment.
* Receive and respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency services and complaints.
* Dispatch and coordinate the responses of public safety agencies.
Identify the appropriate number and type of equipment or apparatus to dispatch.
* Operate radio system with knowledge of pager and repeater system.
* Document activities into the CAD system in an accurate and timely manner.
* Maintain accurate records of events, written logs, and reports of action taken that may be used in legal proceedings.
* Knowledge of local geography.
* Operate LEDS/NCIC and understand data.
* Maintain access to and security of highly sensitive materials.
Send and receive sensitive information using technical devices such as computers, radios, and phone systems.
